A Trip to the Land of the Thunder Dragon

Introduction

Bhutan is also referred to as the Land of the Thunder Dragon, and is a small landlocked state that is located in the Himalayas.

What to know

The capital of Bhutan is Thimphu and every single year they have the Tsechu festival. The festival is a reflection of the culture and religion and features Cham dances, which are traditional dances that are performed in masks. Bhutan is an extremely unique place, and is the world’s last authentic Buddhist Kingdom. The book, “The Raven Crown” was about the Bhutan monarchy. If you want to relax, you should take a bath in a hot spring. The most popular are the Gasa hot springs, which are also enjoyed by native animals such as the Takin. Another thing that you should know about Bhutan is that its home to a variety of different bird species that are in the process of becoming endangered. They rely on the forests in Bhutan and the people of the country take preserving the land and forests seriously.

What to do

One of the things that you should do is go on a walk through the Bumthang valley. If you want to do something a little more adventurous, you can mountain bike. Although the trails are a little tough, the views and scenery are spectacular. Another thing that you should do is go on one of the tours to see the high altitude animals, which include Bengal tigers.

When to go

The end of September through November because these are the best months as far as weather goes.

When to not go

June through September because these tend to be the rainiest months. However, the rain shouldn’t prevent you from planning your trip. As long as you plan accordingly and bring an umbrella, you should be fine.

What to avoid

Avoid buying cigarettes at all cost because it is illegal.

Culture shock

You might be surprised at the price of everything because it tends to be a little more expensive than other destinations. Another thing that might shock you is that the locals eat food with their hands instead of using utensils.
